In June 2010, the State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics as well as the revisions to Ohio’s academic content standards in science and social studies. The standards will be effective in 2014-2015 when newly aligned assessments also will be implemented.

ODE continued its work of refining Ohio’s Comprehensive Educational System with the development of a Model Curriculum, which will be a Web-based tool for educators. During the summer and fall of 2010, teachers across Ohio worked collaboratively in teams to suggest instructional strategies and resources that align with the revised standards. The State Board of Education adopted the Model Curriculum on March 15, 2011. Model Curriculum by Grade Level and Course, as well as related information can be found at the links below.

..Student achievement is on the rise in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, according to the Cincinnati-based Strive Partnership, which has been tracking student progress since 2006 in the Cincinnati, Covington and Newport school districts.
..Strive is a partnership of local organizations aimed at providing education. Partners include, at a leadership level, 30 organizations from philanthropic, business and community sectors.
..Strive recently released fourth annual Partnership Report gives an update on how children are doping on key indicators such as kindergarten readiness, graduation rates and state test results.
..Of the 34 measures of student achievement that the partnership tracks, 81 percent showed improvement in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the report. That’s up from 74 percent in 2009-10 and 68 percent in 2008-09.
..The report shows that the work of the schools and partners is working.
..Among the highlights:
..__Kindergarten readiness improved in all three urban school districts over the past several years. In Newport, 72 percent of children were ready for school, up 12 percent since 2005. Cincinnati’s shot up to 53 percent during that time, a 9 percent jump. Covington’s readiness rate rose to 67 percent last year, up 4 percentage points from the previous year.
..__Cincinnati Public Schools became the highest rated urban school district in the state by earning an Effective rating on the Ohio Report Card.

. Once a year, Ohio rates public school districts and buildings using several measures, based on how well students perform on state tests and on attendance. High school ratings also reflect graduation rates. Elementary and middle school ratings include a “value added” goal – the expectation that the average student will show a year’s worth of academic growth based on test data. The federal government also requires that students make “adequate yearly progress” on state-set goals in reading and math in elementary, middle and high schools.
. Here are several ways to evaluate your school and district:

State Rating: The best is Excellent with Distinction, then Excellent, Effective, Continuous Improvement, Academic Watch and Academic Emergency. (Schools too long in Academic Emergency may have to offer additional tutoring or school choice.)

Value Added: Was the one-year progress goal met, or did students show growth above or below that goal?

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP): The reading and math goals were either met or not.

Performance Index: Measures district and school test results for all grades and subjects, with higher points for advanced and accerat4ed student scores. Ranges from 0 to 120 points.

*Performance Index, 0-120 points
**AYP is Adequate Yearly Progress
